Course Description: During this course, faculty will provide information about important safety considerations that all Settlement Judges should be aware of at all stages of the mediation process. Faculty will examine violence not only in the context of mediation, but of society at large. The course will then examine numerous aspects of safety that you should consider prior to mediating, including consideration of participants’ cultural backgrounds, the parties’ relationships, and the individuals involved. Faculty will then discuss practical considerations to take into account the day of the mediation, such as where to hold a mediation and where participants should sit. They will also cover aspects of safety to consider after the mediation concludes. Law enforcement will weigh in with their perspective on maintaining a safe mediation environment, followed by a video on how to react in a worst-case scenario. Each segment will be followed by review questions that qualify this course for continuing education credit.
